When to Choose a 20ft Container
Choose a 20ft when your cargo is dense, heavy, and relatively compact by volume.
- Heavy, compact cargo: steel, machinery, construction materials, chemicals
- Total shipment volume of 30 m³ or less
- Ports or inland routes with restrictions on longer vehicles
- The unit cost of a 40ft is not justified by your shipment volume
Weight vs. volume: A 20ft container reaches its maximum payload (28,180 kg) at roughly 33 m³. For very dense cargo, you may need two 20fts before filling the volume of one 40ft.
When to Choose a 40ft Container
Choose a 40ft when your cargo has medium or low density and takes up substantial volume.
- Medium- or low-density cargo requiring substantial volume
- Palletized cargo that benefits from additional floor length
- Consolidating several product lines in one booking
- Flexibility to add cargo up to the container limit

The Cost Equation
A 40ft rate is typically 1.5 to 1.8 times that of a 20ft—not twice as much. Therefore, a 40ft is almost always more cost-effective than two 20fts for the same volume.
Break-even rule:
- Cargo > 18–20 m³ → book a 40ft
- Cargo < 15 m³ → a 20ft is more economical
- Between 15–20 m³ → compare the rates for your specific lane
Real example: 18 m³ of electronics. A 20ft at €1,800 versus a 40ft at €2,400. The 40ft costs 33% more but provides twice the space—worth it if you can consolidate additional cargo.
